St. Claire Shores Dance, July 25th – Swing At Wahby Park!

Exciting news! If you love the idea of dancing outside on a small lake, having a little picnic, and enjoying the tunes as you spend some time with great friends and excellent people, there is a new opportunity to do it at Wahby Park in St. Clair Shores!

The event is FREE and will include a one hour dance lesson for swing at 6:30, followed by 2 hours of dancing. The lesson will be taught by Paul Carryer, with DJ’d music following it from 7:30 – 9:30. In case of the weather prohibiting an outdoor event that day, there is a back-up venue nearby that the event will move to.

This event is sponsored and hosted by The Cool City Committee of Saint Clair Shores, and could be an event that expands to a few times a year. New opportunities to dance are awesome, so I hope you can come out and enjoy. If you have any questions, send a note to Swing S.L.A.M.and I can get them answered.

Thanks so much!

MiB Overnight Blues and Fusion Dance Party

We are so excited to be doing this dance part, please tell your friends!

Here is the information as it currently stands!

Come have fun with great people! It’s been a few years since I organized a dance event in the Southeast Michigan area, but here it is, something a little different. The night will start out with some dancing, there may be a Mix and Match competition, there will be some games available, and we will have a movie to cap the night off (or you can head to sleep).

Wood floors, mirrors, A/C, showers, lockers, plenty of free parking, amazing jams, fantastic people!

If you are traveling from out of town, you don’t need housing. How great is that? 😀

Doors will close after 11:00, but there will be a doorbell for re-entrance, and we will have more information coming regularly with more details about the event.

Please invite people that you feel will be both respectful and interested.

Basics:

8:00 – 8:30: Dance Set-up Jam

Want to help set up and make things easier on us organizer folk? This is the time. Moving mats, setting up mood lighting, organizing snacks, etc.

8:30 – 12:30 am: Dancing, Board Games, Hangouts. We have a lot of games! Feel free to bring some yourself too.

More detail.

8:30 – 10:30: pm:

Blues and Swing (almost all music will be danceable to both). Games.

10:30 – 2:30 am:

DJ’s: Kendall, Paul, Carol, and one more to be announced!

Fusion with some blues, and a few fun surprises.

That late night blues and fusion. Also, there will be some classics and fun songs mixed in. If you think of requests, send them our way. If you are an organizer or DJ message me, we are working hard to provide amazing music here.

2:30 am: Movie Night

We are going to pull the mats out, get comfy, and pull the projection screen out for a big movie. Movie options will be put up to a vote shortly.

4:30 – ??? am: Time for sleep or quiet gaming.

11:00 am  Wake up to soft blues and dance if you want to. We are planning on having a cold continental breakfast, more details on that once we hit 10 registrations.

We have some great plans and will have an announcement soon. The event will cap at 50 people, so you are interested and it fills up, you will be added to a waitlist. Please invite your friends. Registration will be available online before Monday, July 9th.

Message any questions you have to Paul Carryer.

Dance Tips For Blues Dancing

Just a few tips to get thoughts rolling in the world of social dancing. This is part one, and includes some of the important points to keep in mind as we venture out into the world of blues dancing (other dances too)

  1. Blues Dancing is a dance that everyone can ask someone else to dance in. Leads can ask follows, follows can ask leads, leads can ask leads, and follows can ask follows.
  2. Unless someone asks you to teach them something, teaching on the social dance floor is something we try to avoid doing. This works on the other side as well. If you want someone to show you something or let you know thier thoughts on how you can improve, you need to ask. Social dancing is the fun part. Lay back, let loose, be safe, have fun.
  3. Be aware of smells and sweat. Wear deodorant of some sort, and please do not leave your laundry in the washer too long so it doesn’t have a mildew like smell. We all like dancing with other people, but some people are more sensitive to smell than others. This can also include avoiding intense amounts of perfume or cologne. Also, it is a great idea to being a change of clothes just in case, particularly shirts. Some venues can be very warm, so even though we aren’t moving much… sweat happens.
  4. Intoxication. There comes a certain point in everyones alcohol tolerance that blues dancing might not be the best for them to do after. If you feel you might be getting to that point, it’s perfectly fine to just socialize and have a good time off the dance floor. We want everyone to be safe.
  5. Take some classes before trying the really fancy stuff. It’s great to have classes for the basics, and many people take the beginner classes and feel they have enough to keep them dance happy (which is great). Some of the more fancy dips, drops, movements, and moves that have sudden stops and such you should have a dance instructor teach you so they are taught safely and properly.

I’ll be adding and editing these as time goes by, thanks for stopping in.

Blues Dance Lessons – Wednesdays in Tremont

Every Wednesday we have blues dance lessons in Tremont!

While the regular space is being renovated, the owner is graciously letting us use another area in the building to launch our group lessons and grow the scene. For those that love the workshops, those will still be around as well, look for the event to be posted soon if hasn’t been already).

Classes are designed for beginner and intermediate dancers and will cover multiple tempos. Wear comfortable clothing and preferably shoes that you can spin in. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at makeitblues@gmail.com or send a note on Facebook to me at Paul Carryer.

Excited to see you there, please invite any friends you think may be interested. Remember, you can drop in any week for lessons, so if you can make all of them or just a few we’d love to have you.

After the class we will be heading to the RED Bar and Lounge in Cleveland for live music and dancing.

Classes are held on Wednesdays at 7:00 – 8:00 pm. The venue is located at 2190 Professor, Tremont Ohio. Please make sure you are headed to the location in Tremont (not Cleveland) as there is another place in the city of Cleveland with the same address. The entrance during rennovations is on 10th street, near the back of the building. If you RSVP as interested or going, you will get a message in the upcoming week with more details. Currently, the parking is street parking as we look to get more solid parking arrangements put together. The fee for the lessons will be $7 per person for a drop in, $20 for the session (four lessons).
